We\u2019re one week into the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and I am one of the billions of people around the world that got carried away with the football fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won\u2019t lie if I say I\u2019ve only missed one game so far, and I am pretty sure there are people out there who have seen them all. World Cup is that special time among football fans that even if there was a game between, with all due respect, Easter Island and Virgin Islands, I\u2019d totally watch it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re in the middle of the group stage and there have already been a few disappointments and a few surprises, just to mention the loss of current World Cup holders, Germany, against Mexico!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody likes boring games and we\u2019re far from them so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">0 &#8211; There have been no 0-0 draws in any of the 20 games at the 2018 World Cup so far &#8211; the last time that this happened was in 1954 (no 0-0&#39;s in the 26-game tournament). Oh, all the fans love statistics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How could we not pay attention to them with a <a href=\"https:\/\/brand24.com\/blog\/media-monitoring-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">media monitoring tool<\/a>? Of course we did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, these are not going to be the stats like the ones you get during the broadcasts of the games, like, how many shots on target each team had, or who was the player that ran the biggest distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will, however, present a deep dive into <a href=\"https:\/\/brand24.com\/blog\/what-is-media-monitoring-and-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media monitoring<\/a> stats such as a number of mentions, social media reach, or most active locations. All that encompasses Matchday 1, so all the games that took place beginning from the opening game between Russia and Saudia Arabia to that game between Poland and Senegal that I\u2019d love to believe never happened\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let me tell you a few words on how I collected the data. I was thinking whether it\u2019s better to create one project per group, or a project per team. The former would probably skew my results and I wouldn\u2019t be able to single them out as effectively as with the use of the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main keywords I used for those findings were Twitter handles that are similar for the majority of other social media profiles of the teams involved. I also used the hashtags that all teams use in their social media posts as their official World Cup hashtags. Mexico? Really? I mean, I was aware they have a really decent team but I\u2019d never think of them as the one having the biggest number of mentions on the web. But then, when you think how passionate they are, it\u2019s no longer that much of a surprise. They are defending the title they won 4 years ago in Brazil, but after the first game, they cannot be too optimistic. Still, the loss against Mexico didn\u2019t have the negative impact on German fans and they are responsible for quite a big buzz with their #ZSMMN hashtag!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, on the flipside, I\u2019ve also got the <i>top<\/i> 5 teams with the lowest number of mentions. This includes Tunisia and Morocco, which I mentioned before saying that I couldn\u2019t find their official world cup hashtags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s particularly interesting is the miserable position of Sweden! Would you believe a nation of Zlatan would be so low in my table? Maybe the absence of Ibra is the exact reason for such a bad result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, imagine my shock when I found out there\u2019s no official Twitter account either for their national team or the football association of Sweden? I\u2019ve only managed to get their Instagram account but the results collected there are far from spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, the <i>top <\/i>5 teams with the lowest number of mentions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tunisia &#8211; 51<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweden &#8211; 76<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Korea &#8211; 2 210<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Morocco &#8211; 2 274<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serbia &#8211; 2 587<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads us to&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Top 5 teams with the widest social media reach. <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you wondering what social media reach is, it\u2019s the estimated number of people that could have had contact with social media mentions containing the monitored phrases. It is based on the number of authors talking about the monitored phrases in social media, the number of their followers\/subscribers\/friends and the typical visibility percentage for the selected social networks (this percentage describes how many of your friends\/followers on average actually see your posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TL;DR to that is simply the number of people that had contact with mentions of the teams participating in the world cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The teams that made the cut in this ranking are almost exactly the same as the ones above.
