AI Brand Mentions: Como monitorá-los e fazê-los crescer em 2026
Search interest in “ai brand mentions” is up +1,050% year-over-year, according to Google Trends. Everyone now is asking the same question: “Is ChatGPT or Gemini generating any brand mentions for my company, and if not, what do I do about it?”
In this guide, I covered two things every marketer should know in 2026: how to track brand mentions in AI search, and how to increase AI brand mention volume across the most popular AI search platforms.
Principais conclusões
-
What are AI brand mentions?
AI brand mentions happen whenever an AI system references your brand inside an answer. They can be explicit or implicit, and they don't need a clickable link to count.
-
AI brand mention and AI brand citation are two different things
For example, Disney gets mentioned in ChatGPT answers about 820k times, but is cited as a source only around 50k times, about 1 citation for every 16 mentions (Source: Semrush AI Visibility Index)
-
ChatGPT and Gemini account for 86% of generative AI market share,
and Google AI Overviews reach over 2 billion users monthly, which is exactly where most of your AI visibility work should start.
-
The same brands tend to get mentioned in both ChatGPT and Google AI Mode
(69% overlap across 22 categories), but through different sources, so a one-platform strategy leaves half the picture not covered.
What are AI brand mentions?
An AI brand mention is any reference to your brand in an AI-generated answer in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, or any other AI platform.
- No link, citation, or any “clickable” source is needed: your brand name showing up in the AI-generated text is enough to be counted as a mention.
- No direct question about your brand is required too. For example, if a user asks “what’s a good ferramenta de escuta social for a small team”, and the AI brings your brand up unprompted, that still counts as an AI brand mention.

AI brand mention vs. AI brand citation
I see that sometimes these two phrases are used interchangeably, though they refer to two completely different things:
- AI brand mention: your brand’s name shows up anywhere inside the AI-generated responses, in the actual text a person reads. It doesn’t have to have a link or be listed in a source list; in general, there is no attribution required, just your brand mentioned naturally by the AI model.

- AI brand citation: your brand (or your website) is listed as one of the sources the AI chatbot pulled from to build that answer, usually shown as a reference, footnote, or as a linked source alongside the response.

In practice, a brand can get huge numbers of AI mentions while barely ever being cited, and vice versa.
A real-life example
Brands like Disney, Netflix, or Marvel are all “named more” than they’re ever formally cited. In a recent Semrush study, Disney alone got 820k mentions versus 50k AI citations, a gap of about 16 mentions for every citation!
Sites like Wikipedia or Reddit are at the opposite extreme: they’re rarely talked about as brands, but they’re constantly cited as primary sources. In the same study, Wikipedia got about 46x more citations than mentions.
Semrush also found that the overlap between most-mentioned and most-cited brands equals 55% on ChatGPT and 62% on Google AI Mode (the lower the number, the wider the gap).
The distinction between AI brand mentions vs AI citations is also the single most-discussed topic in a recent Brand24’s social listening data study: “citations vs. mentions” is the largest of four topic threads tracked, at 29.7% share of voice, with people actively arguing that marketers often measure the wrong thing (Source: Brand24 AI Brand Assistant data, May–Sep 2026).

Types of AI brand mentions in search results
Branded vs. Unbranded AI mentions
- Branded search/mention: someone asks an AI platform about your brand by name when someone asks an AI platform about your brand by name with a direct question, and your brand name is inserted as a prompt mention.
- Unbranded search/mention: the AI tool describes what your product does or a service provides, or how your category works, instead of saying your brand name, and without being asked for you specifically.

Dica profissional: Most of “How to increase your AI brand mentions” section below is about winning the unbranded case: getting your brand to be the one an AI search engine combined with a relevant category for on its own.
Explicit vs. Implicit AI mentions
This is a different category from branded/unbranded mentions, and it refers to whether your brand’s name appears or doesn’t in answer engines:
- Explicit mention: the AI says your brand name outright in text: for example, “Uber” ou “Brand24”, spelled out.

- Implicit mention: the AI describes your brand without naming it: “a well-known ride-share app” ou “a social listening tool”, in such a way that a reader would recognize you; your name doesn’t have to appear in the text.

Both count as AI brand mentions, and both are worth tracking. An implicit AI brand mention still shapes what the reader thinks and strengthens your reconhecimento da marca, even though it doesn’t show up in a simple name search of the answer.
How often either mention types show up can vary by category and by how a question is phrased. The same question, asked twice with slightly different language, can bring different brand mention types, which is why prompt variation testing is important when analyzing your own AI visibility scores.
Why AI brand mentions matter for marketing teams
Reason 1: The buying journey increasingly happens inside AI responses themselves
- 68% of US Google searches now end without a click,
- Visão geral da IA do Google reach over 2 billion users monthly, being woven into traditional search results for most queries,
- ChatGPT and Gemini together account for 86% of the generative AI market share. (Source: TechCrunch)
Unlike a traditional search engine, an AI-generated response doesn’t need a clickable link to mention a brand at all: ranking well in traditional SEO doesn’t guarantee showing up in AI platforms’ answers.
Reason 2: AI mentions of your brand will reach your buyers earlier
“Proven ROI and Traffic Signals” is one of four topics that Brand24 social listening tracked. It had a 25.8% share of voice, which means that every fourth marketer discusses it online.
The listening study found online mentions in which people shared evidence that AI brand mentions drive real value through recall rather than direct clicks (Brand24 AI Brand Assistant data, May–Sep 2026).
Reason 3: A bad or inaccurate mention can hurt brand visibility
Fear, Distrust, and Anger together make up 18.4% of the emotional tone no social listening analysis of online conversations about brand mentions in AI (Brand24 AI Brand Assistant data, May–Sep 2026).
Part of these concerns relates to the possibility of AI misrepresenting brands.

That’s exactly why análise de sentimentos and tracking can’t be optional when it comes to growing your AI search visibility.
How to monitor brand mentions in AI Search
Tracking AI brand mentions requires both media monitoring and AI search results analysis.
Here’s a practical, four-step way to set that up.
Step 1. Define your targets
Start with your brand name, product names, key executives, direct competitors, and the core category terms and prompts that your target audience can search for. AI brand mentions can be explicit or implicit, so “cast this net” a little wider than a standard brand or monitoramento de mídia setup.

Step 2. Set up multi-channel listening
Track across multiple AI platforms and multiple models, since the same brand can get a very different AI visibility score in ChatGPT versus other AI models. It’s mostly because each major AI platform generates answers from a different mix of sources.
Re-test the same prompts with slightly different phrasing too, so a single lucky (or unlucky) test variation doesn’t get mistaken for a pattern.
Step 3. Track AI share of voice alongside AI brand mention volume
- AI mention volume and share of voice: tracking them reveals how your brand mentions compare to competitors’ on identical prompts in the same answer engines.
- Consideration set: track who else shows up alongside you (or instead of you) in AI recommendations.
A real life example:
Semrush’s data shows PayPal mentions bring Apple Pay 86 times per 100 prompts, while Venmo 77x/100, and this isn’t a PayPal-specific effect.
In real estate, HotPads brand mentions in AI responses get bundled with Zillow in 196% of its own mentions, while Zillow returns the favor only 18% of the time (Source: Semrush, “ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: A Tale of Two Models,” 2026).
Step 4. Run regular audits
The constant model updates are greatly influencing AI answers.
Recently, ChatGPT’s citation mix moved more toward Reddit in the first half of 2026 while Google AI Mode leaned further into video sources over the same period (Semrush, “ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: A Tale of Two Models,” 2026).
A monthly or quarterly audit will help catch those kinds of changes early.
One of the real complaints found during a recent Brand24 social listening analysis describes tracking mentions manually as just “running prompts, screenshotting, pasting into spreadsheets”. Another online mention found stated that nobody has fully figured out AI brand mention tracking yet (Brand24 AI Brand Assistant data, May–Sep 2026).
How to increase AI brand mentions
4 content types that earn brand mentions in AI answers
After analyzing the most up-to-date research, I found that there are 4 content types that consistently earn AI brand mentions:
| Content type | O que é isso | Why it earns AI brand mentions |
|---|---|---|
| Original research and data | A study, survey, or dataset you publish yourself (numbers no other brand else has, instead of a summary of someone else’s findings) | Gets more AI citations than generic advice content. AI models prefer something specific and “sourceable”. |
| Comparison pages | A page that directly compares your product with the closest competitors (by pricing, features, use cases, etc.) | Much preferred when AI is building a Consideration Set for the user asking a question |
| Reviews and review platforms | Verified customer reviews on third-party sites (G2, Trustpilot, Capterra, or your category’s go-to review site) | Especially valuable in the Google AI Mode |
| Community discussions (Reddit, forums) | Genuine participation in Reddit threads and forum discussions that already exist about your category | Comprehensive, organic discussions earn mentions naturally, rather than only through owned content |
Here’s how I’d deal with each one. I also added two more tactics worth including in your AI visibility strategies:
Tip 1. Publish original research and data
- AI models favor content that is specific and sourceable over generic advice
- Statistics or proprietary datasets give them something concrete to attribute to.
- A single well-designed study (even a small one, but run on your own customer or product/service data) can earn more AI brand mentions and citations than a dozen opinion posts, because it will keep getting pulled into new answers long after publication.

Tip 2. Build comparison pages
- When someone asks an AI platform to compare options, it’s creating a Consideration Set along with presenting its recommendations
- And what do AI models reach for to build those sets? Other comparison content!
- Structure the page around the authentic decision points buyers consider (like price tiers, features, integrations, support model) rather than a generic feature list
- LLM models need to have something specific to pull from when they answer “Brand A vs. Brand B” questions.

Tip 3. Get reviewed on review platforms
- This matters most in categories that are already much dependent on “traditional rankings” on review platforms
- For example, in the food & drink category, Yelp alone accounts for 77% of Google AI Mode’s citationsem comparação com apenas 20% on ChatGPT (Semrush, “ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: A Tale of Two Models,” 2026).
- If your industry has a go-to review site (like Tripadvisor for travel or G2 for tech and software), building a strong brand presence and collecting social proof from your current customers will usually have a bigger impact on increasing AI brand mentions than adding yet another review widget to your own site.
- Prioritize the two or three platforms your potential customers check before purchase.

Tip 4. Show up in Reddit threads and community forums
- Forum activity carries real, measurable weight for ChatGPT specifically, which sources 59% of its citations from community and reference sites (Semrush, “ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: A Tale of Two Models,” 2026)
- A genuine, credible, non-spam presence in the most recent discussions in your category is worth much more than a link dropped into an old Reddit thread.
- However, keep in mind that this tactic won’t work as efficiently for Google AI Mode, as it pulls from social media and video instead. Consider this tactic based on which platform your target audience uses.

Tip 5. Earn placements in third-party sources
- AI platforms look for independent sources to validate a brand, so a placement in a trusted industry publication will get your brand more AI mentions than one more blog post of your own.
- Por exemplo: fix a shaky Wikipedia entry, invest in genuine YouTube content, and build an authentic Reddit presence (Semrush, “ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: A Tale of Two Models,” 2026)
Tip 6. Make your content easy for AI models to parse
- Clean structured data (like schema markup on product, review, and FAQ pages) and a clear page structure give AI systems an easier path to pull an accurate mention of your brand
- It’s a smaller lift than any of the other five tips, but one that makes all of them work harder.
Best software to track brand mentions in AI-generated responses
I’ve grouped these into four categories, based on what each tool is built to do.
Manual tracking of AI mentions works for quick check-ups, but once you’re monitoring more than a couple of AI platforms, a dedicated AI mention tracking tool will be more efficient.

Using such tools helps you define your targets, set up multi-channel listening, and track both against your short- and long-term AI visibility goals.
