How to Find Trending Hashtags on X (Twitter) in 2024?

7 min read

Each day, 125 million hashtags are tweeted. Using those that match Twitter trends can be extremely beneficial. It will help you reach more Twitter users. How to find trending Twitter hashtags? Take a look at the 6 best ways and a bonus tip below.

I am sure you are familiar with the Twitter app and its Trends for you feature. That’s probably the first place to check.

But definitely not the only one.

You should look for both trending and relevant hashtags. And it’s not the same thing.

Let’s take a look at how to find the right hashtags!

How to find trending hashtags on Twitter?

Twitter has the most advanced trending hashtag detecting system compared to other social media apps. The Trends for you section presents trending topics and hashtags that should match your account.

But does it really work as expected? It’s debatable.

Let’s take a look at trending Twitter hashtags dedicated to the Brand24 account.

Brand24 is an online tool detecting mentions across the internet. Our Twitter account mainly posts about media monitoring, social listening, hashtags, brand awareness, and other marketing topics.

Nevertheless, the Trends section does not present hashtags related to our business niche. Only #DeepLearning is matching somehow, and we could add it to technology-related posts.

All the other hashtags are related to current political events and pop culture. Our social media manager won’t use them for communication with Twitter followers.

02 Use social listening

You can try a social listening tool (like Brand24) if you care about finding more accurate Twitter trending hashtags.

Here’s how it works.

In general, social listening tools monitor mentions of predefined keywords across the internet. First, you need to set up a monitoring project. Then, based on gathered mentions, the tool will present the trending hashtags related to a monitored keyword.

Here are the trending hashtags related to Brand24:

They are much more accurate than the hashtags from Twitter’s Trends for you section. Adding them to tweets seems right.

Brand24 updates those hashtags once per hour. If a new popular hashtag appears, the tool will detect it immediately.

Another great way to discover relevant hashtags is to read the Twitter mentions. You can filter them in the Mention tab.

03 Take a look at the Explore tab

Twitter’s Explore tab is quite interesting. No doubt, it is a source of Twitter trends.

In the Explore tab, you will find:

  • Trends for you
  • What’s happening
  • Popular videos
  • Popular images
  • Viral tweets
  • Funny tweets

If you want to go viral with your tweets, you definitely should pay attention to viral tweets. You can choose topics that interest you the most.

Tracking viral tweets and topics related to your business can be a huge source of inspiration. You can observe what is trending and which hashtags are added to the most popular posts.

Unfortunately, there is no way to filter out the data. The feature returns a massive number of posts, which can generate chaos and make it difficult to find valuable content.

04 Use mobile apps

Many mobile apps aim to find trending (or rather popular) hashtags. Usually, they rely on the same features.

I tested 3 mobile apps dedicated to Twitter: Trending hashtags on Twitter, Trending on Twitter, and Trending on Twitter in USA.

Here are my conclusions.

I don’t find them very useful. All these apps do is present general trending hashtags. That’s all. Actually, they work pretty much the same as Twitter’s Trends feature.

If you want to use mobile apps for searching popular hashtags, I advise you not to use those dedicated to Twitter. Apps like In Tags or Tagify are better. They allow you to explore hashtags by category, or generate them by typing keywords.

But, in general, none of the mobile apps present hashtags strictly related to your business niche and target audience. They only present general, popular hashtags. That’s all.

05 Follow relevant Twitter profiles

People willingly use hashtags on Twitter. I’m sure there are a number of profiles you can follow to observe what hashtags they add to tweets.

Of course, it’s essential to pick the right ones.

Luckily, Twitter prompts you about this. Just take a look at the section Who to follow on your profile or check the Connect feature.

Using a social listening tool is another way to search for influential profiles. Brand24’s tool works great for this purpose. It detects the reach, share of voice, and influencer score of Twitter influencers.

06 Try a hashtag generator

While searching for trending Twitter hashtags, you can try online generators like All hashtag or Inflact. How do they work? I would say similar to the mobile apps I described above.

They will help you find hashtags with a high volume of usage. I couldn’t find generators dedicated to Twitter. It seems that they are dedicated to all social media platforms. So, they don’t present accurate data on how many times a hashtag was used on Twitter.

The Inflact hashtag generator seems to be quite an interesting alternative. All you need to do is type a keyword, and the tool will provide you with frequent, average, rare hashtags that contain a similar keyword.

What’s important, generators do not catch new trending hashtags that start gaining traction on Twitter.

Bonus tip: Use time-based and occasion-specific hashtags

Twitter communities are very creative. Did you know that each day of a week has at least 20 hashtags for different purposes? That’s because people like joining regular events.

For example, on Monday, most of us need a little motivation to start a job. As a result, the hashtag #MondayMotivation was used on Twitter about 10k times in the last 30 days (source: Brand24).

Here are some other examples:

  • #MondayMorning
  • #MondayBlogs
  • #TravelTuesday
  • #WisdomWednesday
  • #WorkoutWednesday
  • #ThursdayThoughts
  • #ThrowbackThursday
  • #ProgrammingFriday
  • #MemeFriday
  • #FridayFeeling

How did I find those hashtags? I searched for Twitter posts containing #Monday, #Tuesday, #Wednesday, #Thursday and #Friday.

Also, I set up a monitoring project for #MondayMotivation using the Brand24 tool. The trending hashtags feature showed me 100 propositions of similar hashtags.

I’m sure there is a time-based and occasion-specific hashtag related to your business niche.
